Simply put, this is an awesome, exciting comic. If we put aside the big surprise ending, everything that comes before is absolutely riveting. I didn't have the ending spoiled for me, so I didn't know how it was going to end. And I definitely didn't expect Peter to just die and Doc Ock to win. So it was very exciting to see Peter try again and again to come up with a winning plan. Slott definitely had the throttle pushed to full. Couple that with Otto always been three steps ahead of Peter, and that just ratcheted up the tension even more! This story was electric in its energy, and Ramos turned in some of his finest work. I have always been a fan of Ramos, and he was marvelous as he drew this major issue. So all around, a totally exciting issue of Amazing Spider-Man – let's hope it wasn't all for nothing. The story is a whirlwind of pain, ego and desperation. You have a nagging feeling the entire time youre reading it that things just won't end well. At the end of this issue you will feel your heart ache there is no way around it. As sadly as it ends though there is also a tiny ember of hope. Dan Slott should be very proud of what he and his team have created here. I follow him on twitter and it is clear that many people hate what he has done at the end of this issue. If I was him I would take that as a compliment as I do not believe there is a comic book in history that has implications as big as this. One day I expect Peter Parker to be brought back to life, mainly due to the Amazing Spider Man 2 film. Do I feel the changes are permanent? Not really but then again this issue did not go as I had anticipated either so who can say for certain? What I can say is that the series has gripped me as a reader and made me look forward to each progressive issue like no other series has in years. This feels less of a cheap stunt (see: Heroes Reborn or the Death of Superman) and more like an opportunity to explore new stories and to give the character a shot of uncertainty. The Amazing Spider-Man #700 truly has an epic feel to it and while this is mostly attribututable to Dan Slott's writing, it is also important to take note of the artwork and coloring. #700's original cover adds to the overall impact of this issue. Humberto Ramos' is the equal of any top name artist to date and is well deserving of becoming a part of comic book history. Personally, my favorite page is the one in which Spider-Man is standing over Doc Ock's body. Amazing Spider-Man ends with a bang, not a whimper, you'll be pleased to hear. Of course, the internet has been cracked in half by the revelations contained within, but what can you do? Personally, I believe that this issue was well thought out, nicely executed, and an enjoyable conclusion to the Dying Wish storyline. The backup stories were not much more than filler for me. The cutesy story with Black Cat seemed a bit pointless and out-of-place and also left me scratching my head. The other one was well-written and may or may not contain clues as to the real Spider-Man's future, but it was ultimately as pointless, as it really didn't contribute much. Certainly not enough to justify the cost of this issue. Over all, however, these minor missteps didn't really ruin my enjoyment of the "final" issue of The Amazing Spider-Man. As a swan song to 50 years of Amazing Spider-Man, #700 does delve into a lot of what makes Peter Parker tick, what makes Spidey Spidey, and proves that strong core character is powerful enough to reform a supervillain once they truly understand it. I can't say this issue knocked my socks off, due to all the unanswered questions and my very real concern that an Otto/MJ skeeve-fest is in the offing, but it is a bold effort, a daring move and it will all probalby turn out just fine in the end. The final issue of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has arrived. Spider-Man as we know him is no more. Comic book readers will be the first to complain if we keep getting the same old stories but if a major change is done to our beloved characters, we'll also complain. This is a chance to see something different. Dan Slott has cooked up a crazy idea and now we'll get to see what happens next in SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN. I am on board to see how this plays out. I'll be reading to see what the next chapter holds for Spider-Man and the supporting cast. Of course Spider-Man fans will not be pleased with what happens. But we do see a great battle that really shows what Spider-Man is about. He is one of the greatest heroes and this issue is a testament to that. One of two books published by Marvel this week, "Amazing Spider-Man" #700 changes the face of Marvel Comics forever. Or, at the very least, for NOW! as the publisher is now set to roll out "Superior Spider-Man" following the epic conclusion of this issue and series. I'm glad Marvel scaled back their releases this week as this issue deserves a little more time and attention from readers and fans. If you collect this series, what are you gonna do? Not buy it? Of course you will, because like me, you might be a completist or is it a completionist? Whatever. The thought of having a gap in a series or not having the final issue is unacceptable. Now I'm actually looking forward to Superior Spider-Man, this new Spidey (Doc Ock) seems more bad-ass & brutal than the old Spider-Man. Just look at what he did to the Scorpion's jaw and you'll get the gist of it. Dan Slot still writes and ex-Scarlet Spider penciller extraordinaire Ryan Stegman takes over the illustrating duties. I drop into Spider-Man books once in a while. This is one of the worst ones I've read under Slott and I really don't care about the outcome as much as the trip to get there. So as "Amazing Spider-Man" ends and "Superior Spider-Man's" head watches with narrow eyes in the distance, a lot can seemingly be said for the fact that at least Slott is trying something new. While the idea of a hero being replaced " or even being replaced by a villain " isn't ostensibly that new or innovative (heck,Megamind's already done it), giving Spider-Man such a drastic albeit assumedly temporary overhaul is certainly daring. Yet still, just because Slott, Marvel and all else involved are trying something new doesn't inherently make it that good, and despite all good intentions the finale of "Amazing Spider-Man" falls flat on its own bravado. "Superior Spider-Man" is a concept that something enticing could be done with and there is no denying that, but "Amazing Spider-Man" #700 seems like the perfect jumping-off point more than anything else. At the end of the day, Amazing Spider-Man #700 turned out to be a reading experience that had a good set-up at the beginning but failed to peak any interest in the new Superior Spider-Man series thanks to its disappointing ending. There are just too many things about the ending that left a bad taste in my mouth for this and other recent Dan Slott Amazing Spider-Man stories. On top of that, the content that was provided was only worthless padding by Marvel to justify" the $7.99 price point. There is a reason that Dan Slott the current writer of Amazing Spider-Man has received death threats from fans. Fans that have been following the title for the last few issues could have seen this issue coming. Therefore what particularly matters at the end of the day is the execution of Amazing Spider-Man 700. Unfortunately this is where the issue falters. Humberto Ramos is not doing Spider-Man any favors. I'm sure there will be some who will be looking forward to the fresh take on the new “Superior” Spider-Man, but, following the example laid down in the Ultimate Universe, Peter Parker is dead and replaced (this wasn't even an original idea). Sure, Marvel is likely to return Peter Parker to the living (perhaps within a year if fan outrage hits critical mass and sales drop), but, to put it bluntly, I honestly don't care what happens from here on. He was inarguably the heart and soul of Marvel Comics, and the Marvel Universe is going to miss him far more than they know. Pass. Read Full Review
